Strong growth of Mexican exports of irradiated fresh produce in 2020
Mexico was hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 but this did not affect the use of irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment.
According to the General Directorate of Plant Health, the quantities of irradiated fresh produce shipped to the US grew by 30% to 27,034 tons .
Most of the growth came from the mango sector where the quantities reached 10,043 tons, which is nearly twice the 2019 figure. At 11,622 tons, guavas remain the most irradiated export item. Citrus (oranges and mandarins) are now on the list of 11 types of fresh produce that must be irradiated to be sold on the US market.
